What is Dedicated Web Hosting?
Dedicated web hosting is hosting where you get your very own server dedicated to do your bidding (like a genie). You don’t share server hardware. You don’t share server software. You don’t have to share anything. It is the perfect type of web hosting for egotists. It is understandably one of the most expensive types of web hosting, but it gives you the most control and power.
Wikipedia says this about "what is dedicated web hosting?": "A dedicated hosting service, dedicated server, or managed hosting service is a type of Internet hosting where the client leases an entire server not shared with anyone. This is more flexible than shared hosting, as organizations have full control over the server(s), including choice of operating system, hardware, etc. Server administration can usually be provided by the hosting company as an add-on service. In some cases a dedicated server can offer less overhead and a larger return on investment."
What is dedicated hosting good for? If your web site requires a lot of disk space, bandwidth, memory, or if you just need more security and customization, dedicated web hosting may be for you. You can install whatever you want. You can use up as much CPU as the server can handle. You can install a custom Apache module or try out a new programming language. You can get in and make detailed changes using the command line or remote desktop.
What is dedicated web hosting not good for? The disadvantages of dedicated web hosting include:
Big responsibility. Depending on your web hosting plan, you have to keep the system up-to-date and running. If a new web server software version is released to fix a security hole, you have to update the server so it doesn’t get hacked. If the web server software crashes over the weekend, guess who gets to fix it? That would be you, my friend.
Server is leased instead of owned. You don’t own the server so you can’t make hardware upgrades or move the server to another facility. If you need to own the server then you will need collocation or managed web hosting.
Cost. Dedicated web hosting can be very, very expensive. Not only do you have to pay hundreds of dollars every month for the service but you may have to pay for every ounce of bandwidth you use.
You can get dedicated hosting with Windows or any variant of Linux and you usually get at least one dedicated IP address. The support you get for your server can vary greatly. The management for your hosting plan may include some or all of the following:
Application updates
Database administration
Server monitoring
Technical support
Operating system updates
Load balancing
DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) protection
Backups and restoration
DNS hosting
If your hosting plan doesn’t include one of the above services then you will have to do it yourself or live without it.
